Designing travel experiences has changed dramatically, especially in recent years. Customer expectations have forced travel companies to fundamentally alter the way they traditionally did things. The result means price is no longer a differentiator and comes second to a dreaming and planning experience that captures hearts and minds before booking.

Virgin Atlantic launched in 1984 and has continued to hold the imagination of the traveling public. With a history of creating unforgettable experiences and a track record for bucking airline trends, Virgin Atlantic is on a mission to become the best-loved travel company. Flying to over 30 destinations globally, their iconic red tail-logo has become synonymous with offering one of the best travel experiences of recent years.

Since 2018, Martyn has been building and running the Virgin Atlantic user experience team. Creating new product teams and strategies from scratch, whilst delivering incremental commercial growth has been a unique challenge. An enviable CV, Martyn’s had experience working across a range of sectors and companies including RSA, the BBC, Diageo, EasyJet and John Lewis, designing some incredible products and experiences.

The concept of the ‘connected traveler’ presents huge opportunities for digital products that cross-over with physical touch-points. The continued blurring of lines between digital and physical means that designing beautiful travel experiences requires multi-disciplinary teams that can adapt to a wide range of user needs and apply good design, content, research principles to kiosks, websites, apps and entertainment alike. In his session, Martyn will share what his team has learned whilst doing this, what didn’t work so well and where they’re heading next, pulling on, and referring to different examples of projects, tools and processes inside Virgin Atlantic.
